The Easiest Leather Ping Pong Net Tutorial

Let me preface this by saying I am not a sewer. In fact, this leather ping pong net is the first thing I’ve sewn in probably 15 years. It’s far from perfect and I don’t have any mind-blowing hacks or tricks for this tutorial, but I will give you the ping pong net height and a guide on how to easily make a ping pong net yourself.

How to make a ping pong net out of leather

Before we dive in, in case you missed our DIY ping pong table top tutorial, we’re using two 5″ Corner Braces to hold our net up. The standard ping pong net height is 15.25cm or 6″, so our braces won’t go all the way up our net, but that’s okay.

Step 1: determine your measurements

The height will be 6″, but the length will depend on your table. Our braces were 52″ from each other, so we made our net 52.5″ long.

Step 2: cut your leather

Cut your leather into two strips that are at least 7-8″ wide and at least 1-2″ longer than your desired length. Set them on top of one another so that the leather is facing out on both sides.

step 3: mark your lines

Mark the first line that you will sew with chalk. We will start with the inner rectangle. Your inner rectangle should be 5.5″ high to allow for 1/4″ of leather to remain outside the seam on the top and bottom. If you are using the same braces as we did, you’ll want to leave 1.5″ from the outside seam.

Step 4: sew

Sew the first line, then alternate between marking your leather with chalk and sewing until you complete the inner rectangle.

We did the long sides first and then finished with the short sides. One thing I noticed as a rookie sewer was that it is important to keep consistent tension on the fabric. We didn’t, so ours has a few spots that look a little bubbly.

Then mark and sew the outside lines. These will go all the way from top to bottom.

Step 5:cut the excess

Cut your net to size using the rotary blade. You want to leave approximately 1/4″ on the top or bottom of the inner rectangle so that your net is 6″ high. For the sides, we chose to cut ours as close to the seam as possible.

There you have it! Now you know how to make a beautiful leather ping pong net for your table.

If it’s your first time sewing like it was mine, I’d highly recommend starting with a test piece so you can get used to the sewing machine and keeping consistent tension on the fabric.
